We brought you Bush baby, AirporTaxi and now Just Jose.
Joseph Mwima commonly known as Just Jose is the man who for the past 5 years has been an indomitable production force behind most of the top hits in Uganda’s music industry. Before leaving Swangz avenue in 2011 to go on and become Supanova Music Group’s head honcho, the music producer had left his mark on many number one hits like Ability, by Goodlyfe, Locomotive (Whistle song) and Mr. DJ that features an all star cast. We talked to him about Signing Keko to Supanova Music Group, future projects, and hanging in Kampala.
Why did you decide to quit Swangz Avenue in 2011?
I left Swangz so I could concentrate on achieving some of the goals I’ve set out in life. It wasn’t going to be possible for me to achieve anything if I remained an employee at Swangz. I left in good faith and we are on good terms.
Where did you move your craft to now?
I now own a record label called ‘Supanova Music Group’. It’s a full scale record label that does artiste management, records and distributes music and shoots music videos, among other things.
Who is the lucky woman that you have managed to keep away from the press?
There’s a woman in my life but I definitely can’t reveal her identity for her own safety, I have you stalkers you know.

How did you get into production?
Henry Kiwuwa taught me the basics about production.
You are known to be behind the production of most of the hottest hits in the country, you have any favorite?
I don’t have any favorites because I come up with a new one every other day.
What is Managing Keko like?
It is tough managing Keko. It takes a lot. She’s doing well especially in other markets on the continent. We however, have to be spot on with everything that we do… i.e. videos, audios, collaborations, interviews, etc. All this has to be arranged and managed by [Supanova Music Group].
Are there artists that you want to work with in future?
I’d like to work with any young and talented artiste out there on the entire African continent.
Well, as the owner of a record label, what is that one thing(s) that you see that should be done by the record labels especially to push artists to the level they ought to be? To the extent of the likes of Dbanj, P-Square, M.I and H.H.P
Record labels need to network a lot especially out of the country, they need to establish contact with the relevant people in the music business on the continent/worldwide. When people saw Make you dance by Keko playing on Trace, they wondered but it was all planned out. We recorded a good song, featured the right artiste (Madtraxx), shot a good video with a good director (Clarence Peters) and did good promotion on the entire continent and everything else worked out. We did all of this through networking.
Keko’s star is rising fast, can we directly link this to her signing under Supanova Music Group? Is there a unique opportunity/support that has lead to such great success that we should know of?
Keko rising fast can be 100% attributed to Supanova Music Group. There’s a lot we do as a label that includes shooting good videos, promotion, styling and more in order to make the artiste successful.
Are there other artists that are under the label? As owner, do you produce all the music?
There is another artiste that we shall soon formally introduce. I own the label but I don’t necessarily produce all the music. Every song an artiste records has to be approved by the label before it can be released.
Your name is very interesting. How did you come to be called ‘Just Jose’?
I had no stage name when I had just started out. So when people would ask me what my stage name was, I would tell them I had none and that I was Just Jose. Most of them mistook it to be a name. After a while I decided to take it up.
Our readers would also be interested to know about the places you hang out when in Kampala.
I like to hang out at Boda boda, Guvnor. If I have to go clubbing. Piato, Ibamba and Crocodiles if I have to eat out.
