The exclusive invitation cards promised a “magical evening of pure fun hard partying and great music aboard MV Amani as we set sail on the waters of Lake Victoria for a moonlit launch into the Galaxy.” While I was personally finicky about bits of the theme construction, the message was unmistakably clear; hard partying on a boat.
It was the official launch dance party of 100.2 Galaxy FM, a new radio station branded as “Uganda’s latest and hottest dance hit station for Luganda speaking urban Youth in the 18-35 years age bracket.”
Boarding was scheduled to start 12:00 noon, giving a two hours allowance for late comers before sailing off at 2:00 pm. You would actually think that boats would be stricter on time management, alas! An hour after 2pm and we were still at Port Bell. By then some people had lost their patience and got off board, which left me wondering though, is an hour spent marooned in the company of hot girls dressed in booty shorts, drenching themselves in beers that are rumored to induce a panty removing syndrome the worst way to start hard partying if you actually came with intentions of rocking the bloody boat? But by 3:30, the anchors had been yanked out of the water and we were on our way to an undisclosed destination.
On board were Galaxy staff and invited guests, notable of whom were Afande Kelekele (who actually presents on the station’s breakfast show), Salvador the comedian and Viboyo the Zina hit maker, a song that was adopted as Galaxy FM’s slogan presumably for its overt innuendos.
Snacks had already been served and drinks ranging from wines, spirits, canned beers to soda were making rounds around the boat, no restrictions, everyone picked a drink of their choice, and drank their fill. Along the way, revelers danced to the Dj’s hot contemporary hits, both local and western, while others enjoyed the comedian’s banter.
After sailing for about two hours we finally arrived at Mutoola Resort Beach & Campsite. To many of us, it was a shocking realization that we were now in Mukono. There didn’t seem to be much on the agenda while at the beach though, and after an hour or so of playing football, swimming and eating fish, there was a cutting of cake ceremony shortly after which the revelers got back on board and prepared for another two hour return voyage to Port Bell of drinking and booty shaking. If partying hard was the objective of this party, then I can confidently say the objective was accomplished, my only disappointment was that the much acclaimed panty remover turned out to be a scam.
