Pearl Rhythm festiva is an annual event that celebrates the finest of Uganda’s authentic artistic products. Since its inception in 2012, the festival has given Ugandan artists the platform to shine and connect with their audiences.
On Saturday 24th October, 2015, the 4th edition of the Pearl Rhythm festival was held at the National Theatre grounds. The Pearl Rhythm festival is an annual event that started in 2012 and celebrates the finest of Uganda’s authentic artistic products. Pearl Rhythm fulfills its mission of making grass root and contemporary arts accessible with multi-disciplinary performances, interactive discussions and exhibitions.
Some of the notable acts that featured this year at the festival were Joe Kahirimbanyi of Qwela band, Michael Kitanda, Afrigo Band, Sammy Kasule, to mention but a few. The festival was organized by Suzan Kerunen, a renowned world music artist from Uganda and attracted notable corporate sponsors such as Uganda Waragi. Uganda Waragi celebrates it 50 year anniversary this year and is highlighting all things that are unique to the Pearl of Africa and the true Ugandan spirit in a yearlong campaign and was happy to be part of an event that supports and furthers the talent of Uganda’s leading world music and alternative artists.
The festival has been a stepping stone for artists that have participated before such as Suzan Kerunen, Myko Ouma, Kaz Kasozi, Most Wanted Band, Jamila Nasanga, Sempeke Bisaso, Hakim Kiwanuka, Jovan Kiyinji, Kinobe Herbert, Harry Lwanga, Jamal, Qwela, Joel Sebunjo, The Magic Horns, Jackie Chandiru, Ceasar Kajura and the city blend band, The Undercover Brothers, Arpeggio, Charles Obina, Raymod Parwot, Suzan Kerunen, and Watmon Troupe.
Susan Kerunen explained the rationale behind the festival saying, “The Pearl Rhythm festival gives world music and authentic Ugandan artists a platform to perform, connect with each other and create future music projects with the aim of promoting collaborative working across the whole creative industry in Uganda”.
The festival was sponsored by Uganda Waragi, the Spirit of Uganda which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Speaking on the significance of this partnership, Rhona Namanya, Brand Manager-Uganda Waragi said, “The Pearl Rhythm festival is a celebration of Ugandan arts particularly music and creativity. Uganda Waragi, that has been fondly named the Spirit of Uganda, is celebrating all things that are unique to the Pearl of Africa and the true Ugandan spirit and is honored to support and further the talent of Uganda’s leading world music and alternative artists”.
