Have you ever imagined your favorite news show being anchored by a celebrity? Well it happens every weekend on Urban Television! This week’s news anchor is the outspoken advocate of women’s rights, Hon. Dr. Miria Rukoza Koburunga Matembe.
She is passionate about issues of leadership, good governance and integrity. She founded the Centre for Women in Governance (CEWIGO) in which she is a member.
Matembe as she is popularly known is a born again Christian and Lawyer by profession. She is married to Nekemia Matembe.
She was one of the 21 member commission that prepared the draft Constitution of Uganda which was later promulgated into the National Constitution of Uganda in 1995. She is also a former lecturer on law and English at the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Kampala.
In Uganda, Dr. Matembe was the minister for ethics and integrity from 1998 to 2003, after she became a representative at the Pan-African Parliament.
In 2007, she was recognized and awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws (LL.D) from Victoria University in Canada. But Hon. Dr. Miria Matembe is also a recipient of many other awards, most prestigious of which is the Women Heroines Award, under 100 Heroines of the World Project, awarded in New York, USA (October 1998).
Matembe’s story is one of lifelong dedication to justice and gender equality. Her outspokenness in advocating for women`s rights could be her claim to fame. But far from that, the variety and effectiveness of her work is what made her an ideal honorand for the convocation during which she was awarded her Honorary Doctorate.
