Located along the Jinja high way, in Mukono town is Amigo’s bar. Set on the first floor of one of the commercial buildings opposite City shopper’s supermarket, this bar changed the face of night life in Mukono.
At first glance before one walks into the bar, it’s like any other common bar- Mukono standard-without much to strike you but on entering, it’s a large bar with large plasma screens placed in all the strategic corners for the sports lovers to watch soccer and other sports depending on what is happening. The bar area, I must admit is one of the best I have seen around town; Kampala inclusive, the bar has an array of red light blended with blue lights that give a calm feel to the patrons as they buy their drinks.
The arrangement of the different drinks on the cabins is another appetizer and leaves one spoilt for choice on what to drink especially if you are not loyal to a particular drink, there are drinks ranging from whiskeys, sherries, rum, gins to wines. The music, played by the resident deejay, especially on Fridays; ‘Dj Micheal’, is nothing to complain about as he plays music ranging from the ‘old skool’ music, to the current and latest jams as he blends in the local music from our Ugandan artists and all over East Africa.
The Amigo’s crowd doesn’t strike you as a very ‘upscale crowd’, for lack of a better phrase but the kind that stays around and find pleasure in listening to local music and pull all the funniest dance strokes man can think of. Nevertheless it still fills the bar to the brim and that’s a plus for the owners. On the other hand a section of the crowd also includes students from Uganda Christian University and some people who drive all the way from Kampala to have a feel of an out of town bar.
The cost of alcohol at Amigo’s is relatively low in comparison to the price of alcohol in Kampala, the 300ml bottles go for 3500ugx where as the 500ml bottles go for 3000ugx. The spirits are sold in shots, quarter bottles, half and full 750ml bottles where the relatively cheaper full bottle goes for 25000ugx. On Wednesdays the prices of shots are sliced by a half and as such those that enjoy a strong drink can enjoy as many as they please for half a price.
They also provide shisha, for those that love to smoke but don’t like cigarettes which goes for 8000ugx in different flavours; Apple, Mint and Strawberry flavours.
The bad points:
A lot of work needs to be done on the air conditioning because; a foul stench fills the place when the crowd gets large and wild especially on Fridays and for a person who loves their comfort this would be a complete turn off.
The security needs to be worked on to as there are many fights that occur and this is not only dangerous to the innocent revelers but also causes losses to the bar owners as bottles are thrown around and stools broken.
In all its worth, this is a bar one would consider going to if they are tired of the monotony of going to Kampala bars. It helps to kill the stress and fatigue from a whole week’s work especially on Fridays.
