Do you know what happens when you celebrate a social media day, with a panel of speakers holding social media gadgets, to an audience with social media gadgets? Well, that’s what I wanted to find out.
Predictably, before the speakers began, the audience was asked to minimize interaction with their phones. Yeah, like that was going to happen. How else were we supposed to tweet? Seeing the ‘gifts to be won’ on a table in the corner (courtesy of Smile Telecom, Airtel, and Wine Garage), it was no surprise that mass tweeting was going to have a huge part to play in who won the goodies. To that end, the phones and tablets remained glued to the hands. Heck, even the speakers involuntarily kept reaching for their phones.
Selfies were shamelessly encouraged. Some of them even appeared on Urban TV, after some editing from the elves in the studios.
There was a major discussion about the merits and demerits of social media. Surprisingly, some people hadn’t known that there’s a difference between social media and the internet! In one camp, they said social media amplifies someone’s natural disposition. In the opposite camp, they said social media brings out someone’s opposite personality. In the end, they agreed to disagree. They also said that despite the popularity of social media, it should not replace ‘old-fashioned’ human interaction.
Oh, there was cake, and it was delicious! Also, coffee, soda, and other knick knacks were for sale.
Smile Telecom was generous enough to provide internet for the event. They stated that it was strictly for Facebook and Twitter though. When asked about Instagram and G+, the representative went silent. That was a can of worms he didn’t expect to open. In the end, the internet was to be used for whatever need tickled the user’s fancy.
