After a one year hiatus, the Social Media Awards were held again, Saturday 7th March, 2015, at Golf Course Hotel. This was the culmination of two months of nominations and voting of brands and personalities perceived to be at the forefront of social media usage in Uganda.
Slated to start at 6pm, guests were not allowed in the venue until 7pm. After that, the event did not start until an hour and a half later. A red carpet affair, the entrance was torrid with cameramen. Some of us had never seen such flashes of light in such short spells of time. No wonder celebs usually don sunglasses at night. On getting in though, it was a huge contrast. The hall was darker except the stage.
After a slideshow of social media facts and tips, Ruyonga kicked off the event with a wrap up of 2014 (we’re proud to be the ones that introduced this style on social (Ruyonga’s Weekly Wrap Ups)). His seamless tongue twisting rapping style left many mesmerized. There were more interludes, featuring performances from Joe Kahiri of Qwela, DJ Crisio and DJ Twonjex. Of course the crowd was waiting for Tiwa Savage who was the main act on the night.
When it came to the awards, the night had 14 winners who included brands, organisations and individuals.
If the crowd reactions were anything to go by, Katoto (Best YouTube Channel) , NWSC (Best Customer Care) , 4040 (Best Social Justice), were much deserved winners! The surprises on the night included UMEME (for Best Crisis Management), MTN Egg hunt (Best Campaign). When NTV won the award for Best Innovation, Malcom…. Who was taking too much time on the mic, was booed off stage to allow social media star – Patra Kiguli to give a word. When they appeared on stage for the second award they won (Best Media Outlet), she this time got to give a few words before Malcom.
When OLX won the award for Best Online Business, a few jokes went around saying, that even this award can be sold on OLX. The sarcasm in this was hopefully only noticed by a few. The full list is at the end of the article. Unlike the first year, (refer to http://www.dignited.com/12654/full-list-of-social-media-awards-winners-2015-oddities-you-missed/#.VP8zwvnbUv8.twitter)
It was amusing to see some of the judges exhibit stage fright. With their impressive CVs, one would not imagine even they were afraid of a little crowd in the dark. Perhaps it was the reason their speeches were not presidential. They were short and kempt. After the awarding of all the awards, event lead Seanice came onto the stage with the Blu Flamingo team to deliver appreciation to all who were involved in the awards. After what seemed like a lifetime of a speech, we were finally relieved to hear Tiwa would come on stage!
Tiwa Savage then came on stage with very well endowed queen dancers. If you’ve watched the Glo ads on TV, the size of these dancers gave us a hint they were Nigerian too. None of that fleshless dancer business. Tiwa put up a very exciting performance despite the fact she was heavy. When it seemed the crowd was feeling too corporate to get on their feet and dance, she left the stage to engage them. At one point she stood on a chair as some very creative fans used this opportunity to take a selfie with her.
The Awards were definitely a step up from the last ones, however the question remains, should the sponsors be nominated?
